Net Prophet 2013

Net Prophet 2013

Date: 23 May, 2013
Time: 8:00 – 17:00
Venue: Artscape Operahouse, Cape Town

Take the most innovative/successful/creative/ambitious thinkers and entrepreneurs in the Internet space, and ask them to share their stories, ideas and predictions for the future in a format that is fresh, relevant and engaging.

That’s what Net Prophet has been doing for the last few years, with a 1500-odd crowd full of entrepreneurial techies getting inspiration from some of the industry leaders on stage. This year’s Net Prophet line-up includes Mike Butcher – TechCrunch’s European editor – Bob Skinstad, Andre de Wet and more.

Net Prophet 2012

One of the most inspiring parts of Net Prophet (which was started by the non-profit RAMP foundation) is the Net Prophet Bursary. Since Net Prophet’s inception, they’ve raised money to fund student education in tech-IT at the University of Cape Town. Accepting donations like these (or rather, getting people to fulfil previously pledged donations) was quite an undertaking for them, following up on emails, phone calls and reviewing proof of payment… exactly the kind of headaches in manual reconciliation that we try to minimise in accepting online payments and donations.

We sat down with the Net Prophet team and started designing a crowdfunded donations platform; something that will clearly state the target of what they want to raise and how far they’ve got to go to reach it. We made the platform responsive, so that it looks and acts nicely on laptops, tablets and smartphones (something the Net Prophet attendees are most likely to have with them) and included things like a leaderboard that shows the top ten donors (and auto-tweets about every donation received). We’re really happy with our beta version below:

The feedback has been great and Memeburn ran a story on it here. We’re really excited to see it in action and we’re keeping fingers crossed that Net Prophet will reach (nay, exceed) their goal of sending three students to university.
