TEDxCapeTownWomen was truly bold + beautiful

We couldn’t have asked for a better way to end off our 2019 event calendar than by participating in the sold out TEDxCapeTownWomen event, which was held in the Silo District of the V&A Waterfront on Saturday, 7th December.

TEDxCapeTownWomen, an offshoot of TEDxCapeTown, is a self-organised movement that provides a platform for people to share innovative and powerful ideas with the Cape Town community. The theme of this year’s TEDxCapeTownWomen event was Bold + Brilliant, and featured six speakers who shared their stories and ideas that were bold and brilliant with a feminist and African twist.

The presentations focused on a variety of topics, from the innovative applications of 3D printing in rural healthcare settings to the potential of Psilocybin (one of the active ingredients in magic mushrooms) in treating depression and alcoholism. The captivated audience were also treated to lessons from a traditional spiritual healer on the importance of taking responsibility and honouring oneself; on overcoming vulnerability and victimhood from a sexual abuse survivor; and on staying true to oneself, irrespective of the gender that may have been assigned at birth. There was also an inspirational talk from the youngest woman in the history of Botswana Parliament and Cabinet on the importance of women empowering each other to ensure that they aren’t forgotten by the history books.

Live Boldly by PayFast

PayFast TEDxCapeTownWomen Activation Stand
The PayFast stand

As one of the main sponsors of the event, PayFast had an activation stand in the lobby area where we ran an exciting competition that gave attendees the chance to win five PayFast branded battery packs. To enter the competition, all people had to do was to apply a beautiful “Live Boldly” gold foil temporary tattoo on their body (which we made especially for the day), take a picture of it and post it on social media using #Liveboldly and tagging us. At the end of the event, we randomly selected five winners who were ecstatic at the prospect of no longer being caught off guard with load shedding.

TEDxCapeTownWomen had one of the best swag bags we’ve ever seen, consisting of stylish t-shirts, beauty products and a rose gold PayFast branded pen to top it off. Without a doubt, the speakers, beautiful venue, delicious vegetarian food and sponsored freebies contributed to making everyone who attended feel bold and beautiful.

2019 has been an amazing year for us event-wise and we are excited for what 2020 has in store for us.
