PayFast’s goal is to be an ecommerce enabler; helping businesses, individuals and causes to accept online payments in a variety of ways.

The PayFast Story

PayFast was founded in 2007 by Jonathan Smit and Andy Higgins with the vision of helping online merchants (businesses, individuals and causes) grow their business. Over a decade later, tens of thousands of merchants from a variety of South African businesses, big and small, have registered with PayFast and trust us to process and manage online payments made by their customers.

We continuously strive to remain innovators in the South African fintech space by launching new features and payment methods to help our merchants grow their business. We also ensure that our existing solutions remain cutting edge in functionality and security. We have strict security measures in place securing everything within a robust PCI DSS Level 1 environment. We also have dedicated resources equipped to fight online fraud and to keep both buyers and sellers safe from abuse.

In July 2019 PayFast was acquired by the DPO Group, spurring the growth of Africa’s largest payment service provider.

What differentiates us from the rest

Startup and small business focused

PayFast merchants don’t require merchant bank accounts to accept online payments. This means that our online payment solution is ideal for startups, small businesses, NPOs and individuals who want to get paid instantly and securely online.

Customer-centric

We are known in the industry for our great customer service. We value our merchants and their customers above all else and our Cape Town-based customer service team are dedicated to offering them a five star service.

Giving back to the community

We recognise the importance of supporting local startups so we’re proudly involved in various meetups, hackathons, conferences, tech and charitable events. We also provide resources worth tens of thousands of rand to charities each year, including a free web page on our Cause Index, to assist them with their online fundraising efforts.
