BACKGROUND
Chic Mamas Do Care http://www.chicmamasdocare.org.za is a South African volunteer-based NPO established in 2010 for the benefit of educational projects, mainly Early Childhood Development (ECD) in very impoverished areas. Extreme poverty is compounded by the lack of equality in Education offered at public schools, especially those in townships and informal settlements. Impoverished children often enter the school system physically, socially, cognitively, and emotionally underdeveloped, thereby lacking the foundations to cope with literacy, numeracy and life-skills at school. Education is the only way to sustainably break the cycle of poverty. It helps to reduce social and gender inequality and enhances the child’s potential economic contribution to society. We believe it’s a basic human right for every child to be given the opportunity to grow in a safe and stimulating environment and to enjoy an education that equips them with employment potential.

Chic Mamas Do Care identified an opportunity to fund vital ECD projects through the sale of donated, pre-loved clothing. As fashion - particularly fast fashion - is the world’s second biggest polluter, we promote conscious shopping habits, the reuse and recycling of pre-loved quality items, and the impact of green consumerism.

The Durban team of volunteers, holds two major fashion fundraising events annually. Whilst these events are very successful, the overwhelming needs among the ‘unseen’ communities our doorstep, far exceed the funds raised. As a result, we focus our input on projects that add significant on-going future-generation value and inject hope into the children’s lives that we touch. Our most effective method of impacting large numbers of preschoolers is by installing stand-alone, fully-functional preschools and by funding accredited ECD training to equip teachers to have their pupils school-ready. Post installation, we walk alongside our schools to ensure sustainability whilst guiding them to become empowered and ultimately independent of us.
