DYA is a unique, youth-led organization based in Diepsloot. The aim of the organization is to contribute to the social development of the youth of Diepsloot, through working and partnering with independent organizations and government programs in the aim to eradicate youth crime, drug and alcohol abuse; it also ensures youth participation in sports, recreation, arts and culture activities, also motivates and assist in information that will lead them to find jobs and bursaries to further their education.
Since inception, DYA has developed programs that ensure youth participation in recreational activities such as sports, arts and culture. Its programs include Football, Theatre, Poetry Sessions, Cheerleading, Kwaito Dance, and Netball (which starts in April 2014). On the 17th of June 2012, “DYA June 16 Tournament” was launched so as to gain greater participation of the youth in Diepsloot and to use the tournament as a platform to bring the youth together, to commemorate the youth of 1976, and to remind them of the important role they play in developing South Africa. The ‘Diepsloot Arts Alive Festival’ has been developed to achieve similar goals as those stated above; it will also serve to bring the youth together during school holidays in June/July of each year
