PLEASE HELP US FEED THE MINDS AND MOUTHS OF THE CHILDREN THAT WE WORK WITH IN DIEPSLOOT DURING AND BEYOND LOCKDOWN
Whilst schools have been open for several months, they have not been able to accommodate all the learners due to the strict Covid-19 regulations and social distancing rules - only 20 children are allowed per class. As class sizes are usually 65 to 80 kids, only one Grade out of the Grade 1, 2 and 3s can be accommodated in any given week.
This means that the Grade 2 and 3 learners that we work with only come to school every third week and would have had a total of 5 weeks of school since March by the end of the year.
YOUR SUPPORT WILL ENABLE US TO ENSURE THAT SOME LEARNERS COME TO SCHOOL AT LEAST TWICE A WEEK, INCLUDING THE WEEKS THAT THEY ARE MEANT TO BE AT HOME AND WILL
1) Receive a meal
2) Attend literacy, art and sport classes
3) Zoom in with our Virtual Volunteers for personalised one on one reading lessons
The above requires paying local volunteers small stipends to co-ordinate these activities as our usual volunteer programme is on hold as our volunteers are not able to visit the school.
It also require spending money on data for internet access, stationery, masks and sanitisers which are all expenses that we would not have imagined would have needed to be budgeted for!
WE ARE ALSO PROVIDING FOOD PARCELS/VOUCHERS TO THE MOST VULNERABLE FAMILIES FOR AROUND R600 PER FAMILY PER MONTH.
In order for us to keep up with this demand, we are grateful that you are considering making a donation towards this initiative.
EDU FUN IS A VOLUNTEER LED, non-profit Public Benefit Organisation located in Johannesburg, South Africa. We partner with the Diepsloot Combined School (DCS) located in the informal settlement of Diepsloot. Many of the families live in shacks without electricity or indoor plumbing.
Unemployment was rife prior to the pandemic, however the situation in Diepsloot continues decline and your support is needed now more than ever.
