Hlumelelisa

Hlumelelisa is an ancient Nguni word that means a new spirit, or more literally, a new shoot from a dead branch. The need to renew and heal the spirit is the organisation's founding principle. It does this by providing a 10-month long, accredited training course in horticulture and life skills to incarcerated persons. Since its establishment in 2003, 900 people have graduated from its training programme. Humelelisa is registered in South Africa as a Non Profit Organisation and a Public Benefit Organisation. This means that donations to the organisation are tax deductible in terms of Section 18A of the Income Tax Act.
