St Dominic's Catholic Church Welkom

St Dominic's is a Catholic Parish, with a statutory status of an organisation for the public good, as per the Office of the Commissioner, Policy and Law Application: Direct Taxes, of SARS, 18/11/3 of 10/10/2000. In that capacity it receives donations, both for its own work, and that of member societies of the parish. Of these the Knights of Da Gama is a registered NPO 000-890 of 16 January 2001, the Saint Vincent de Paul society is a registered NPO 003-193.

We are situated in Welkom in the Free State province of the Republic of South Africa. Welkom was established as a gold mining town in the 1950’s. Currently only a few of the mines are still in operation and Welkom is slowly shifting in its character as being a hub in the Northern Free State. Throughout the history of the city the Catholic Church has been present. The Parish is also associated with Saint Dominic’s College, a premier Catholic School in Welkom.

The parish forms a part of the Diocese of Kroonstad, in cooperation with the pastoral leadership of Bishop Peter Holiday. In its nearly sixty years of service to the community of Welkom the parish has been staffed by members of the Order of Preachers (or Dominicans). This Order, dedicated to preaching has brought the Good News of Christ’s Gospel to the region with dedication and persistence.
